Hand in Hand
Primary Advisor and Primary Strategy Manager Hilary Ferries and Suzanne Morgan, Literacy Advisor have initiated a project, 'Hand in Hand' working with five schools in Brighton and Hove to develop exciting approaches to learning which encourage risk taking and the importance of vision and passion. The five schools have been chosen in response to their School Improvement Plans (SIP). A number of themes and approaches will be offered to the schools to best suits their needs, these include Philosophy for Children (P4C), development of critical thinking skills, Global Citizenship, creativity and will all be underpinned by Assessment for Learning (AFL).
Developments will be closely linked to three main themes: Successful learners, Confident individuals and responsible citizens.
After initial meetings with Head teachers, work will begin within each school depending on their chosen focus, and aims to move schools forward in providing Education for citizens of the 21st Century.

Post-inspection support and guidance
Primary Advisor for Brighton and Hove City Council, Hilary Ferries contacted Brighton Peace and Environment Centre to ask for support for a school following an inspection. West Hove Infants School were recently given a glowing Ofsted report, but are keen to develop what the report highlighted as areas for improvement, particularly, "finding more ways to develop pupil's understanding of Cultural Diversity."
Hilary had met with the staff team to give some initial ideas but is keen for BPEC to further develop work in the school. The Local4Global funding enabled BPEC to deliver training to the whole staff team of the school, developing teachers understanding of Global Citizenship and providing practical tools for incorporation across the curriculum within an infant school.
A follow up session will give teachers an opportunity to reflect and discuss any concerns or questions they may have after carrying out Global Citizenship activities in the classroom.
Outcomes:
1. Teachers develop their understanding of teaching Global Citizenship and have access to advice and resources to support this work in their Infant School.
2. LA Primary Advisor advocates for and promotes Education for Global Citizenship within schools in the city.
