Teachers and other educators building a learning community for the global dimension

Cheddington Church of England Combined School

Cheddington Church of England Combined School is a small, rural, school located in the Vale of Aylesbury with approximately 200 pupils from 5 – 11 (one class per year).

Cheddington school has started developing its Global Schools programme  over this year in a number of ways.  An introductory twilight session was held with all teachers at Cheddington School on 1st April 2009, which gave teachers an introduction to the Global Dimension and activities to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions of people and places.

Dylan Jones, Head teacher and Liz Levoi, PSHE Coordinator/Year 1 teacher attended further training at Reading International Solidarity Centre (RISC) on Global Dimension Auditing in May 2009 (one day course) and a 3 day course on Global Citizenship training (June-July) respectively.  Both Dylan and Liz presented feedback about their training at subsequent staff meetings.

Cheddington teachers Dylan Jones (Head), Julia Sulson (Deputy Head), Liz Levoi (PSHE Coordinator and Year 1 teacher) and Kate Van der Lind (School Governor) met with Ruthie Malleson (ADEC) for a global dimension audit and planning meeting on 3 July 2009.  The audit enabled teachers to reflect on what they are already doing in terms of the global dimension and to identify action points to develop it further.

Action points identified during the Cheddington audit included:

a) Participating staff are committed to writing the global dimension into the school development plan at the forthcoming July 2009 planning meeting.
b) At further two to three training sessions with teaching staff and ADEC staff in Autumn 2009 and Spring 2010 terms will be carried out. The Autumn term session will aim to enable the incorporation of the global dimension into lesson plans by the Spring 2010 term and discuss monitoring and evaluation.  The Spring 2010 training session will aim to monitor progress, identify further opportunities and identify and overcome constraints.
c) Further developing an existing link with a rural Gambian school. ADEC will carry out teacher training on international school linking in Spring 2010. Teachers will aim to develop a comparison of energy consumption between the Gambian school and Cheddington.  Liz Levoi will also look into linking with an urban school in the UK.
d) Cheddington is committed to involving the PTA and Governing body developing the global dimension. ADEC will provide an hour’s whole school governor/PTA training in Spring 2010.
