Fareham College

Fareham College is always keen to ensure that our Equality and Diversity Policy is a ‘live' and developing response to ensuring that our staff and students make a positive contribution to our local and global community. The support provided through the Centre for Global Awareness (Flic and her team) and funding provided by DFID is helping us to achieve this.
The College first contacted the Centre for Global Awareness to request support with student learning. It was through this initial contact that we learnt about the project work that was available to us. We were keen to progress this and following initial meetings with Flic Dunkley, two half days training sessions were arranged for key Management staff. Thirty-four senior members of staff attended these sessions. They included the Principal, Executive Director HR, Vice Principal Resources, both Directors of Faculty, several members of the support staff management team and all Heads of Department for the Curriculum. The training was interactive and thought provoking. The feedback from everyone was extremely positive and all are ready to move forward.
Simon Neale, Director of Faculty for general Studies will be the lead person for the curriculum on this project. A further planning meeting has been arranged for the 11th February 2009. At this meeting Carl Groves - Principal, Angela Hinton - Executive Director HR, Simon Neale - Faculty Director and Jean Anderson - Curriculum Staff Development Manager will agree the next stages.
We want to develop and embed the principles of ‘Citizenship'
Our aim is to raise awareness and understanding around the two key themes of the Global Dimension (GD) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). We intend to do this primarily by:
• establishing various training sessions supported by Department for International Development (DFID) funding. These sessions include curriculum development days and small group sessions;
• developing the curriculum and resources to include more input and a greater focus on GD and ESD;
• cascading though a student focus group.
It is the intention that the support given by the DFID will assist Fareham College in:
• eliminating false ‘assumptions';
• raising the consciousness of the issues surrounding GD and ESD with staff and students;
• the production of GD and ESD responsible resources.
It is also hoped that this work will lead to a greater involvement with local schools on joint projects reflecting the need for raising awareness of key issues.
Once Fareham College has developed the resources the plan is to share good practice with other colleges.
We are really motivated by the support we are receiving and are looking forward to the work ahead!
