Oxford Brookes University
Westminster Institute of Education, Oxford Brookes University
Westminster Institute at Oxford Brookes is currently revalidating its ITT courses. This offers opportunities as well as challenges for our partnership initiative. In the first year, funded through DfID, the following activities took place:
Curriculum developments
- Seminar introducing Global Citizenship, the Global Dimension and RISC's work to school partnership mentors, in collaboration with Debbie Bowers (School Partnership Coordinator)
- Planning of GC/GD sessions with Geoff Anderson (Senior Lecturer Professional Studies) and delivery of sessions to 50 GTP students
- Planning of GC/GD sessions with Carol Ducker (Senior Lecturer in Education - Primary Art and Design) and delivery of sessions to 180 Primary PGCE students during their Community Weeks in November/December 2008
- Carol Ducker worked with her Art and Design students on a project inspired by RISC's work on Ghanaian textiles, focusing on Adinkra printing and the work of contemporary Ghanaian Artist Owusu Ankomah (see images)
- Carol Ducker met with Gill Hopper from Reading University to discuss the revalidation of the Oxford Brookes Courses and how GC is embedded within the courses at Reading.
Strategic developments
- Meeting on 17 July 2008 with Geoff Anderson and Carol Ducker to discuss RISC's input to the revalidation process and the new PGCE and BAEd courses as they develop
- Meeting on 31 July 2008 with Geoff Anderson, Mary Sutcliffe (Senior Lecturer in Education - English) and Ann Disney (Senior Lecturer in Education - English) to discuss RISC's potential role in the revalidation process and how GC/GD could be embedded in the new courses. It was agreed that members of RISC's Education team would attend a meeting at Brookes to discuss this further with other key members of staff.
- Through Ann Disney it was agreed that we should meet with Debbie Wright (Senior Lecturer in English) in January 2008 and that she would set up a meeting with other staff
Summer/autumn 2008 saw a number of staff changes at Oxford Brookes, which have caused delays in the process - these included Debbie Bowers leaving and Geoff Anderson retiring. Debbie Wright has confirmed Oxford Brookes's commitment to working with RISC. The next meeting was confirmed for 04 March 2009.
Unfortunately it has not been possible to meet with Oxford Brookes Staff. The March meeting was postponed and has not yet been rearranged.
