Teachers and other educators building a learning community for the global dimension

University of Reading Education Department

Progress and plans April 2009 - March 2010

Global Citizenship is now established throughout the BAEd course. Papers detailing this work have been presented at ESD/GC in ITE conferences and published by LSBU in a booklet and online.
Research funding has been secured to investigate the extent to which former students have been able to impact on the delivery of GC within their primary schools.

An article about the project appeared in StArt magazine for primary art teachers published by NSEAD in October 2009.
An online archive of student research is planned, enabling good practice to be disseminated to teachers and beyond. An intern from the Art and Design dept will begin developing this archive in June/July 2010.

GC is now an established part of the course for the 1st and 2nd years. A paper outlining this work has been published online by LSBU.
Work with a third tutor in the department is now beginning, and plans are being developed to extend and enhance the projects, and to make
links with other subject specialisms.

  • GC is now an
established feature of the Professional Studies programme for all 180 PGCEs. This year’s focus was on GC in PSHCE and tutor time.
  • GC has for the first time been integrated into the secondary PGCE Art & Design course for
students, and for their school mentors. A case study and article has been requested for the NSEAD website and secondary magazine, AnD, describing
some of the resulting schemes of work.
  • GC has for the first time also been integrated into the secondary PGCE Science course for students. RISC has agreed to offer 3-week Further Development Placements (FDPs) to 4 science students in June/July 2010, with the objective of developing and trialling GC in science schemes of work.
  • GC training will take place with Music
specialist PGCE secondary students this year, and plans are underway to work with their mentors. A research project is planned, to add replicable lesson ideas and background information into a databank.

Primary

GC training is established as part of the primary PGCE course for all students (60+): an introductory day for cross-curriculum project
planning in term 1, a GC day focused on the new curriculum areas of learning in term 2 and a half day on assessment and evaluation in term 3.

GTPs

Global Citizenship training was provided as part of the secondary GTP course for the first time this year and plans are in place for
provision next year.

Music
Masters

MA Music in Education students took part in a 4 week research project entitled Global Music and Global Citizenship - 'global' music and soundscapes in education, culminating in presentations of research and lesson plans/activities. Students’ research will be combined with the PGCE work.

Early
Years Professionals (EYPs)

RISC has agreed to provide training for EYPs on Global Citizenship in the early years for the first time in May and September 2010.

Theatre Arts, Education & Deaf Studies

RISC delivered GC to 2nd and 3rd year students on this course for the first time this year.

ICSET
(Int’l Centre for Studies in Education & Training)

ICSET is about to submit an application for substantial funding for a national research project, with the following objectives

  1. To
deepen our understanding of how teacher professionalism can be developed that incorporates the Global Dimension (GD)
  2. To
identify and understand good/interesting policy and practice in teacher development in the UK and to recognise differences in approach between
England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
  3. To
understand the characteristics of being an effective professional for teaching the GD.
Updated July 2010

Tutors at the University of Reading have worked closely with RISC for a significant period. Support from Local4Global has enabled focus on the incremental spread of the global dimension across subject specialisms, both Primary and Secondary PGCE courses and, more recently, the research-based International Centre for Studies in Education and Training (ICSET).

At at the national ITE conference on Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship in July 2009 Gill Hopper, University of Reading and Barbara Lowe, RISC, presented this critical review of the progress of the Global Citizenship in Art and Design project so far.
'The impact and effectiness in global citizenship in Art in ITE provision and beyond' (Doc 59kb)

Outcomes
- An article on the English Department's work has been published online by LSBU.
- An article based on the Art and Design activity is being written for StArt magazine for primary art teachers planned for the October edition.
- In collaboration with Gill Hopper, RISC made a substantial contribution to the ICSET response to Barry Sheerman of the Commons Select Committee on Global Learning.
- For the first time all current secondary PGCEs (180) had a global citizenship lecture and seminar as part of Professional Studies. RISC has agreed to repeat the session next year with increased time to prepare the tutors leading the seminars.
