The University of Brighton Faculty of Education has been looking at ways of embedding the Global Dimension into teachers training courses and has identified a number of opportunities to bring the Global Dimension into its teaching practice.

Global Dimension resources and artefacts are explored during the Geography module of the Post Graduate Certificate in Primary Education course. Secondary Geography PGCE students spent an afternoon at Brighton Peace and Environment Centre to gain an introduction to Global Citizenship and a chance to explore Global Dimension resources.

'Making Connections' - a module on the BA Education course encourages students to work with cross curricular projects and saw students visiting a new housing development based on Sustainability principles and were introduced to practical activities for the Primary classroom exploring these principles of 'One Planet Living'.

An exciting new module was introduced academic year 2009/9 which saw four tutors with varied expertise delivering this ten week 'International Education' Module.

The module included; a look at the role of NGO's in education, a specific focus on a Nepalese school, National perspectives on Diversity and impact on classrooms and Creativity and Criticality in International Education. Students were asked to prepare and present a scheme of work for the Primary Classroom with a focus on the Global Dimension. Presentations ranged from the Journey of a T-shirt to learning about the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Students acknowledged that they had learned a great deal about Global issues throughout the module and through their research for their scheme of work.

"I believe that the students are very inspired by teaching the Global Citizenship theme. This term they gave some most thoughtful, innovative presentations and the thinking, sensitivity and consideration that went into the work was a joy to see. It's great that we have such a committed, creative group of new teachers joining the profession."

Work is also under way with Dr Jenny Elliott, Principal Lecturer in the School of Environment and Technology at the University of Brighton to identify where and how the Global Dimension is being delivered in the Initial Teacher Education (ITE) Programmes at the University of Brighton. This work involves interviews with ITE Lecturers, audits of current ITE modules and discussions with student focus groups. Findings will be fed back to key people within the School of Education and to regional networks to discuss further development of the global dimension within the school's ITE courses.
